Septic System Maintenance: An Introduction

Three Ways Your Septic Tank May Need To Be Serviced

Do you live in a home that has a septic tank instead of a connection to a sewer system? This can cause you to wonder what may need to be done to service your septic tank over time. Here are three things that can come up as a septic tank owner.

Septic Tank Pumping

The most common issue you are going to run into is the need to pump the septic tank of the solid waste inside it. One thing to keep in mind is that the septic tank is not a sealed tank where all waste goes into and then needs to be removed. It is actually an intricate system where solid waste turns into a liquid and leaves the tank. If the solids in the tank become too high and end up covering outlets where liquids enter or exit the tank, then you will run into problems where the tank needs to be pumped.

A septic tank service company will come out to your home, locate the opening of the tank, and physically remove the solid waste from it. Septic tanks tend to fill more quickly when there are more people living in a home and the solid waste doesn't have a chance to break down.

Septic Tank Repair

Another potential problem is that the septic tank may become broken, which will result in the need to replace a portion of it. This can happen if there is a baffle that is damaged, which prevents the solid waste from leaving the tank. You may also have plumbing that has become damaged due to tree roots, or a tank that has become damaged from driving heavy vehicles on top of its underground location.

Drain Field Repair

If the solid waste exits the septic tank and enters the drain field, this can lead to the need to repair the drain field. The drain field is designed to move the liquid waste deeper into the ground so that it can be absorbed by the soil. If that drain field becomes clogged with grease and solid waste, the liquid waste will have no way to go deeper into the soil. This causes the liquid waste to make its way to the surface, which creates a bad odor and wet ground caused by the wastewater.
